Lesson 2: Reflection Assignment

  • In a devotional speech at BYU, Elder Lynn G. Robbins said, “Because the natural man is irresponsible by nature, he goes to the [anti-responsibility] list as a defense mechanism to avoid shame and embarrassment, stress and anxiety, and the pain and negative consequences of mistakes and sin. Rather than repent to eliminate guilt, he sedates it with excuses. It gives him a false sense that his environment or someone else is to blame, and therefore he has no need to repent.”
  • Discuss this quote and its application to the concepts of wellness, self-esteem, and growth vs. fixed mindsets. In your comments, draw from Elder Robbins’s talk, the course text and specific examples from your own experience. You may also use additional quotes from church leaders that support the relationship you see. You should write at least 2 paragraphs.
  • Then, reply to at least two other students whose ideas extend or challenge your own understanding, addressing their comments in light of your own experience.
